Allen lucky enough to hire Kalen DeBoer as OC got Ramsey then Penix at QB....since DeBoer left (HC at Fresno now Washington) with the QB's....Indiana has sucked and will continue to suck....Allen is a goof that back stabbed reportedly his way into that job.
"Indiana has sucked and will continue to suck"... LOL!!!
And another point - you wrote"Pitt is It". I bought a button on campus in either '81 or '82, when we had the home and home (Marino vs. Eason!!!) that said "Shit on Pitt". 🤣🤣🤣
oh yeah what a game that Pitt vs. Illinois 1982 in CU Illini played at Pitt 1981...who the hell scheduled Pitt? c'mon....DeBoer and Allen like Beckman and Matt Campbell...u found out later who was the driving force behind winning at Toledo and it wasn't 'boy howdy'
George Atiyeh nose guard rambled for that TD....great Sports Illustrated article 83? about how crazy Pitt was in those days off the field...had a LB named Becker who had been thrown out of the dorms got caught in the dorms tried to escape out a third floor window, fell to his death....bad B1G hires....Beckman, Brewster at Minnesota, Hazell at Purdue, Don Morton Wisconsin, Jim Colletto Purdue, but Dick Rod at Michigan since it is 'Michigan' set that program back quite a bit...Lloyd Carr did leave a mess but man....Michigan stopped being 'Michigan' for a long time cause of the Rod.
Jeff, this is a great issue! Love it, especially the "what if" about Tony Romo. How did I not know that?
Oh man, that 2002 season was so pivotal. Everything went south after that. With Romo at QB, 8-4 seems possible (losses converted to wins would be Southern Miss, San Jose State and a Big 10 opponent, maybe OSU). It's even possible they start out strong and beat Mizzou (yes, wishful thinking). With a solid record and a bowl game that year, who knows what the consequences would have been for recruiting, etc.?
would have changed the whole Turner era dynamic 8-4 2002....WWS had youngsters Moeaki tight end/Richardson blue chip tackle and Illinois wanted them so they took Beutjer...always knew Turner had thoughts about a transfer QB that summer finally got it confirmed it was Romo...would have been perfect fit for that Illini offense, ended up being drafted vs. IIRC free agent Cowboy signing....players respected Romo....they didn't respect Beutjer who many viewed as 'not tough physically or mentally'.....opposite of how they viewed Kittner...needed a strong personality at QB to handle guys like Lloyd....didn't have it...oh well.
I can still see that big clunky D lineman lumbering down with that pick in the '82 Pitt game. Sigh... I'm sure you know who it was. 😉👍
"Boy howdy"! Man, the worst hire at Illinois, maybe in all of the B1G. Ugh!!!
Wow, Tony Romo in CU? That would've been something!
And that info about IU's locker room? GMAB. Tom Allen seems to me at least, a lot like Beckman. Dorky, too rah rah for major college football.
Great stuff, as always!

I can still see that big D Lineman lumbering down the sideline with that pick in the '82 Pitt game. I'm sure you know his name.
"Boy howdy"! Ha! The worst hire in Illinois history, by far, and perhaps the worst in the B1G??
Of course you knew the Pitt nose guard. Sitting with the Marching Illini, seeing him "run" made me want to run out and tackle him.
Yikes, that's some bad stuff going on at Pitt. And excellent list of bad B1G hires.

Keep it up! This is great reading!
