Yeah, in hindsight, about White, you're 100% right. He skirted the rules, and it ended up biting him in the end. I remember the talk about wanting to leave the B1G back around '81-'82. Would've been the worst possible thing to do. I had a "Puke on Duke" button.
Funny you mention the '08 Rose Bowl, we were there and I ended up crashing a tailgate party with members of the '84 RB team. I remember talking with Dwight Beverly and a couple of other players.
Good points about Bo wanting Mo at Illinois and recruiting.
Think that tailgate you crashed was Mike White's tailgate...was at it for about 45 minutes right outside the Rose Bowl with all those 84 Rose Bowl guys there that day 08.....couple of the coaches that stayed on after White with Mackovic admitted that Mackovic staff likely did much better with all the talent White's staff left for them 88-90 cause after 87...White's patience well he was at the end, burned out...old story, White became Raiders head coach maybe 94 for a season, Al Davis fired him Christmas eve as head coach....when Bill Walsh died, Davis was at a Raiders staff meeting and someone popped in, said Walsh had died, Al Davis supposedly said, 'well that is too bad...everyone will remember Bill Walsh as a champion, a great head coach...I will remember him as the guy who talked me into thinking Mike White could still coach, he couldn't' and moved the meeting on to the next subject quickly.
We, Contra Costa, played & beat Merritt College in 82 as the Elton Illinois stuff was starting. We shut him down & punked him. His shenanigans cost us back to back bowls, in 84 we would have been bowl bound, I think possibly Cherry Bowl. When my JC guys Sebring, Taggart, Ashley & a few others had our first meeting with Coach White he mentioned to us on how to Beat the system. We didn’t have to be scholars but keep contact with academics. I grew up on Chuck Muncie & as a kid I knew he didn’t go to class at Cal. Nuff said.
Wow, what a wonderful time to be on campus! As I was reading the last third, I kept thinking "Bo". And then you brought him up. I remember hearing that Bo was upset that UI fired his buddy Gary Moeller, and that's why he ran up the score in the early days.
Thanks as always for brushing the cobwebs off my memory.
The poster in the top, it's the '83 season, but has the Rose Bowl logo. That was released after the season obviously. Do you have any more info on it? I have a couple of those early year schedule posters, but sadly not all.
commemorative poster of some kind cause the 83' season poster I found had a sponsorship on where that football is on that one...indeed Bo said Moeller 'was building Illinois the right way' when he was fired....course Bo didn't say that Moeller went to Illinois and tried to run the Michigan offense/defense he had learned under Bo without the same type of players...Bo could come in Moeller era and take the top 2 3 prospects each year out of Illinois so he liked Moeller at Illinois just fine.
Bo/Bobby Knight the 'moral authority' those days in the Big Ten which looking back at that idea now...laughable....out at the 2008 Rose Bowl White was at a practice admitted how nuts he was at Illinois during that period of time but he wanted so bad to win, beat coaches like Bo...that he 'went nuts sometimes' to achieve that....as I have said, make no mistake about it, White an old fashioned hard ass coach that ran some of the toughest practices in the conference at that time...if only he would have been a little more disciplined/smarter how he did 'business' probably would have gotten away with it. HA
Uhh yeah Coach White & his staff ran the crap out of us. When he was pissed we’d star practice with a goal line scrimmage. We had 6am running at the Armory. Whew.
