Jeff,

Thanks for your comments on the Illini. Very insightful. I'm a new reader of your work, so I'm sure you've already dealt with this question at some point, but I'll ask anyway. What's your assessment of Bob Blackman and his time at Illinois?

I'm asking because yesterday after the Northwestern win, I was looking at Illinois season records year by year going back to 1950 to compare this year's defense with other great Illini defenses. When I made it to Blackman's tenure, I began looking at his record game by game. Six seasons, four of them 5-6, three of them tied for third in the Big Ten, only one losing conference record, which was also the only season any of his teams finished in the bottom half of the conference, and an overall winning conference record (24-23-1). His non-conference schedules were brutal — all Power 5 schools, many of them at the top of their game (1972 vs. No. 1 USC, one of the best teams of all time, jeez). And his conference schedules! His teams played Ohio State and Michigan back to back every year when those schools were at their Woody & Bo pinnacle.

Anyway, I got to thinking that if Blackman coached in an era of 12-game regular seasons, cupcake non-conference schedules and bowls for any team with six wins, all four of his 5-6 seasons would have been at least 7-5, his 6-4-1 season would have been 8-4 or better, and he would have taken five of his six teams to bowl games. In other words, he was a damned good coach. How did he ever get fired?
